Benefits and Obligations

ADMISSION/RESIGNATION PROCEDURES

  1. The Membership Committee shall recommend the admission and termination of memberships to the Board of Directors.
  2. Any member may withdraw from the Academy by delivering to the Academy a written resignation.


BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP:

All members (including affiliates) will be eligible to:

  • have their personal information added to the CAIS online network
  • have their work or publication(s) added to the CAIS online library
  • have their publication(s) added to the hard-copy library
  • identify themselves as members or affiliate members of the Canadian Academy of Independent Scholars
  • contact other scholars in our online network
  • attend events, classes and workshops organized by CAIS (some fees may apply)

Additionally, full members will be eligible to:

  • receive a library card to borrow material from Simon Fraser University's (SFU) library, with a login and password to access SFU online indexes and databases. New members must come in person (one time only) to SFU's Belzberg Library (515 W. Hastings St, Vancouver) to pick up the library access card.
  • attend workshops on using university and public libraries and their websites for advanced research strategies.
  • be considered for an appointment as an Independent Scholar-in-Residence
  • qualify for grants and assistance with publishing
  • join CAIS committees
  • stand for Board elections
  • vote for the Board
  • present their research at the regular CAIS gatherings

OBLIGATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMY:

All members of the Academy (including affiliates) are required to:
  • pay their annual membership fee

Voting Members of the Academy are expected to:

  • attend the regular Academy meetings at least once a year
  • deposit a copy of their work and/or publications at the Academy Library
  • give a formal presentation of their work or work in progress within two years of being accepted as a Member
  • participate as much as possible as volunteers in events organized by the Academy
  • participate in voting and decisions made by the Academy

Affiliate (non-voting) Members of the Academy are expected to:

  • attend and support the activities of the Academy at a level appropriate to their interests
