How can I become a member?

To apply for membership, download and open the application form, save and send it by email to membership@independentscholars.net, or print and mail it to:

Membership Application Form

When your application is approved by the board of directors, you will be informed by email and asked to pay your annual membership fee, $5 per month for the first partial calendar year and $60 per calendar year thereafter.

Grants

How are grants allocated?

CAIS has a separate grants committee to read through all applications. The committee decides upon which applications receive funding. There is no set number of grants with fixed funding amounts; every year, CAIS endeavours to fund as many worth applications as possible.

When can I apply for a grant and how long does it take?

Grant applications are due June 30 each year and decided in the months proceeding. Grant applicants must be in good standing with their membership dues.

Academic Resource Access

How can I gain access to the SFU Library?

CAIS members are eligible to receive a library card from Simon Fraser University, which allows them to borrow from any of SFU’s libraries and to access SFU’s online library services. To pick up your library card, you must appear in-person, with photo ID, at the circulation desk of SFU’s Belzberg Library at 515 West Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver.

Do I have to pick up my card in-person?

Yes.
