The Canadian Academy of Independent Scholars Monthly Meeting UPCOMING MEETING Date: Thursday, October 20th, 2011 Time: 7:30 pm Place: Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC campus, 515 West Hastings Street (between Seymour and Richards Streets) in the Diamond Alumni Lounge, Room 2065 (second floor) Speaker: Mark Dwor Topic: Jeptha and His Daughter Up until fairly recently, the Bible was part of the intellectual connective tissue throughout Western Civilization. Its stories were well known, both in the literal and an editorial fashion. I will be discussing the story of Jeptha (Book of Judges, Chapter 11 and Chapter 12, Verses 1 - 7) and His Daughter (specifically c. 11 v. 30-40). This is a stark, difficult episode that has attracted much theological commentary, which I will try to ignore completely but rather deal with some literary references to the story and the obvious knowledge of the audience of the story. Mark Dwor is the Chairman of the Canadian Academy of Independent Scholars. For questions about events, or if you would like to present to the Canadian Academy of Independent Scholars, please contact Mark Dwor at 604-662-3908 or mdwor@sfu.ca To be added to the CAIS email list send your request to: interdisciplinary-cs@sfu.ca |
